Schoolboy, 11, on bike killed after being hit by bus pictured as police make public appeal

Police have named and pictured the schoolboy who was killed after being hit by a bus while riding his bike as Mason French.

Officers from Northumbria Police were called to the scene of the incident on Lizard Lane in Whitburn, West Lothian, at 3.30pm on Tuesday.

Officers and emergency services attended the incident but sadly the 11-year-old died at the scene.

Inspector Phil Patterson, of Northumbria Police, said inquiries were ongoing and has asked anyone with useful information to come forward.

He said: “We are continuing to support Mason’s family as they try and process what has happened.

“Our thoughts are with Mason’s loved ones, as well as the local community, who are deeply saddened by this tragic incident.

“We are working hard to establish exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the collision and have already spoken with the bus driver, who remained the scene, as well as a number of witnesses who were in the area at the time.

A police spokesperson said on Tuesday: “Officers are currently in attendance at the scene of a serious collision in South Tyneside.

“Shortly after 3.30pm today police received a report a cyclist had been riding on Lizard Lane, when he was struck by a bus.

“Officers and emergency services remain in the area, and the road has been closed while enquiries are carried out.”

Messages left for the boy at the scene of the incident describe him as “amazing, kind-hearted, beautiful”.

Another tribute at the scene read: “What a tragic loss of a beautiful boy. Our thoughts are with your family at this difficult time.

“He was a wonderful boy and he will be badly missed.”
